Scripture Focus: John 14:23
“Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching…” (NIV)
Devotional Thought
How would you describe following Jesus. Many people view following Jesus as a checklist — a list of tasks to obediently accomplish. However, it is a relationship shaped by love that expresses itself in obedience and gratitude. Relationship precedes obedience.
Interpretation
John records Jesus' reassuring response to Judas, affirming that anyone who genuinely loves him will naturally keep his word, prompting the Father and Son to come and make their home with that person. This mutual indwelling highlights a relational union available through free response to Christ's loving initiative, where obedience flows from grateful affection rather than compulsion, reflecting God's desire for all to enter this intimate fellowship. In context, "keeping the word" encompasses Jesus' teachings as the new covenant's fulfillment, blending moral transformation with victory over sin through his life, death, and resurrection. It is necessary to recognize the spiritual progression: love me – obey my teaching. Obedience springs forth as a loving relationship of allegiance.
Contemporary Relevance
Christians grow not by guilt but by gratitude. Love fuels obedience. Grace fuels transformation. Gratitude fuels perseverance. A life marked by love, obedience, and gratitude becomes a living testimony to the beauty of Jesus. Our first responsibility to God is not to obey. Our first responsibility is to love. When we give our loving allegiance to Jesus, obedience will surely follow.
