Be Holy Because God Is

Scripture Focus: 1 Peter 1:15–16

Devotional Thought

We instinctively imitate those we admire — a parent, a mentor, and a friend. Scripture calls us to imitate the One who created and redeemed us.

Interpretation

Peter calls believers to holiness in every part of life, mirroring the perfect holiness of the God who summoned them out of darkness into his marvelous light. This command echoes God's direct words in Leviticus, where holiness means being set apart for his purposes, distinct from the world's ways yet empowered by his gracious call rather than human effort alone. Holiness here reflects a relational response to God's character — his utter purity and wholeness — inviting believers into a shared family likeness through Christ’s atoning work that makes such transformation possible. The emphasis falls on God's initiating holiness as the foundation, with believers pursuing it in conduct as a natural outflow of his electing love and Spirit's presence. Holiness is meant to penetrate every corner of our lives; every spoken word and every action.

Contemporary Relevance

Holiness is not withdrawing from the world but living differently within it. It is about taking on the character of God as the one unstained by the impurity of the world. We become holy by being near the Holy One. As we spend time with God — through Scripture, prayer, worship — the Spirit transforms us.
