Scripture Focus: John 3:5–6
“…no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit…” (NIV)
Devotional Thought
There is something about hearing that first cry from the lungs of a newborn baby. Every new birth marks the start of a new story. Jesus says entry into God’s kingdom requires a birth that only the Spirit can bring.
Interpretation
Jesus reveals to Nicodemus that entering God’s kingdom requires a transformative new birth of water and the Spirit, echoing Ezekiel’s promise of cleansing and inner renewal, where human efforts alone fall short. Verse 6 contrasts flesh-born humanity — limited to natural, sinful tendencies — with Spirit-born life, emphasizing that only the Holy Spirit’s active work produces a spiritual nature capable of kingdom living. Being “born of the Spirit” means the Spirit sovereignly initiates this rebirth in response to faith, freeing individuals from fleshly bondage to embrace God’s covenant faithfulness through Christ’s victory over sin. Being born of “the water” points us toward the regenerative and cleansing role of baptism in a believer's life, perhaps symbolically representing water breaking at birth. This rebirth empowers willing hearts to participate in the Spirit’s renewing presence.
Contemporary Relevance
God does not merely ask us to do better — He gives us new life. The Spirit awakens faith, nurtures trust, forms new desires, and enables obedience. This new birth is relational: God draws us into His kingdom family and begins shaping us into people who reflect His love and truth.

“Being born of the Spirit means God is rewriting our hearts—bringing new life and new purpose.” — N.T. Wright
