Scripture Focus: Hebrews 6:1

“…let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity…” (NIV)

Devotional Thought

Starting faith is a gift — but staying spiritually immature was never God’s intention. Just like it would cause concern if a newborn failed to mature physically, failing to mature spiritually is reason for concern. Growth is part of spiritual health.

Interpretation

The writer urges believers to “move beyond” foundational truths — not to abandon them but to build upon them. The phrase “be taken forward” conveys God’s active involvement in our growth. Maturity is not achieved through sheer effort but through a responsive partnership where God strengthens, guides, and forms us. Foundations serve a purpose: they support a life that grows, expands, and reflects God more fully.

Contemporary Relevance

This week marks the beginning of a purposeful journey toward deeper formation. Growth requires intention — choosing to let God shape your mind, your character, and your understanding. Staying at the starting line may feel safe, but it prevents maturity. Many Christians who have been in the faith for 20, 30, or 40 years, fail to grow spiritually because they have not had 20, 30, or 40 years of growth, but one year of growth 20, 30, or 40 times. God is inviting you forward — into deeper trust, deeper wisdom, and deeper participation in His work. It has often been said, “God loves you as you are, but He loves you too much to leave you that way.”
