Scripture Focus: 1 Corinthians 12:7
“Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.” (NIV)
Devotional Thought
A thriving community is built when everyone contributes something meaningful. The Spirit ensures that the Church functions the same way — everyone has something to offer.
Interpretation
Paul writes to a divided church where spiritual gifts were being misused. He teaches that the Holy Spirit gives a variety of spiritual gifts to each believer, not for personal glory but for the common good of the whole Christian community. These gifts — from wisdom and knowledge to healing and prophecy — are distributed according to the Spirit’s will, emphasizing diversity within unity. These gifts reflect God’s gracious work empowering believers to serve and build one another up in love and mutual care. The verse highlights that the purpose of spiritual gifts is cooperative and communal, aimed at strengthening the body of Christ so that all grow together in faith and service. This view stresses the Spirit’s active presence among believers to equip them for living out Christ’s mission in unity and hope.
Contemporary Relevance
The Spirit has gifted you — uniquely and intentionally. These gifts are not badges of honor but tools for service. When each believer uses their gifts, the Church becomes a vibrant expression of God’s presence. God invites you into meaningful participation, not passive observation. Your gifts matter to the mission and health of the whole body.
