Scripture Focus: Ephesians 2:10
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works…” (NIV)
Devotional Thought
Think of something handmade — crafted with care, intention, and love. Paul says that is you: God’s masterpiece, not mass-produced or accidental.
Interpretation
Paul has just said salvation is by grace through faith, not by works. Then he describes believers as God’s masterpiece of craftsmanship, highlighting that new life in Christ is God’s gracious creative project, not something we produce by our own effort. In the flow of the passage, salvation is grounded in God’s initiative and love, yet this gracious re‑creation has a clear purpose: that those who are in Christ “should walk” in good works as a lived response to his saving action. These good works are not conditions that earn salvation but the Spirit-enabled path of faithfulness within God’s covenant family, Jew and Gentile together. In terms of atonement, Christ’s death and resurrection not only deal with sin but also create a people who embody God’s healing, reconciled life in concrete works of love and justice prepared in advance for them.
Contemporary Relevance
You are not an afterthought in God’s story. He has handcrafted you with the care of an expert woodworker. However, this is not a design that is meant to be put on display as an ornamental piece. He designed you to be put to use. He has good works prepared — not as pressure, but as pathways. Some will be small and quiet. Others will require courage. Either way, they are places God’s beauty shines through you. Today, ask not “How can I prove myself?” but “How can I participate with God’s goodness?”
Quote of the Day
“You are God’s masterpiece, created anew in Christ to live out His loving purposes.” — John Piper
