Scripture Focus: Galatians 5:16
“So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” (NIV)
Devotional Thought
Trying to overcome sinful habits on our own feels like pushing a boulder uphill. Paul offers a better way: walk with the Spirit.
Interpretation
Galatians 5:16 urges believers to "walk by the Spirit," presenting a present, ongoing choice to live in step with the Holy Spirit's inner prompting rather than yielding to the flesh's selfish impulses. The Spirit's transforming work empowers believers who respond in faith, progressively reshaping desires and habits toward Christlike freedom without relying on legalistic efforts. The verse highlights the internal opposition between flesh and Spirit, where cooperative growth occurs as the Spirit — freely available through Christ's inclusive atonement — renews the heart for covenant faithfulness in everyday life. To walk is to commit to a way of life. Walking in the Spirit is committing to live a life consistent with the Holy Spirit’s principle of loving others.
Contemporary Relevance
Holiness comes not from trying harder but from staying closer to the Spirit. God’s relational presence guides, convicts, comforts, and redirects us moment by moment. Walking with the Spirit is attentiveness — listening, responding, yielding, trusting. It is like a little child holding to the hand of their parent as they proceed on a walk. When you are strolling with the Holy Spirit, sin becomes less attractive and less appealing.
Quote of the Day
“True holiness is found by walking daily in the Spirit, who replaces our old desires with new fruit.” — Dr. Kelly Brown Douglas
