Holiness Is Required To See God

Scripture Focus: Hebrews 12:14

Devotional Thought

We often treat holiness as optional — something reserved for “really spiritual people.” Scripture says otherwise: holiness is essential for knowing God.

Interpretation

Hebrews 12:14 calls believers to pursue peace with others and holiness, emphasizing that without holiness no one will see God. The verb “pursue” infers an intense and continue effort. This verse stresses the necessity of living a consecrated life reflecting God's character, which enables believers to experience God's presence and fellowship both now and ultimately. The call to holiness underscores a sincere, ongoing relationship with God, essential for beholding His glory, while recognizing that it flows from God's grace rather than human achievement. Seeing is not speaking about observing with something with your eyes. It has more to do with knowing the one who is seen. Ultimately, seeing God is connected to a transformed life increasingly aligned with God's will, made possible through Christ’s atonement and sanctifying grace.

Contemporary Relevance

Holiness is not legalism — it is relationship. Sin blinds; holiness opens our eyes to God’s presence. As long as we choose sin, we are like the religious leaders who scorned the man born blind who was healed by Jesus. Jesus pronounced that they have been the ones unable to see the whole time. The pursuit of holiness creates space for communion with God, shaping our desires to align with His.
