Scripture Focus: Isaiah 6:3

“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.” (NIV)

Devotional Thought

When something is said three times, it signals absolute importance. When heaven cries “holy, holy, holy,” it is revealing something far beyond emphasis — it is unveiling the character of God Himself.

Interpretation

Isaiah 6:3 records the seraphim's thunderous threefold proclamation — "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts" — emphasizing God's perfect holiness as his defining attribute, set apart from all creation in moral purity, majesty, and glory that fills the earth. Holiness speaks of set apartness, that which is the standard, uncorrupted and pure. This triple repetition underscores the Trinity's unified holiness, revealing a God who is wholly other, transcendent yet immanently present, inviting awe without compromising human responsibility to respond in faith. In context, God's holiness confronts Isaiah's sinfulness, yet offers cleansing grace through atonement, pointing forward to Christ's victory over sin. The earth's fullness of his glory shows holiness not as distant judgment but as transformative light accessible to all nations in the present age.

Contemporary Relevance

God’s holiness is not icy distance — it is the blazing goodness that purifies, restores, and confronts wrong. It fuels God’s mission to renew creation through Christ. Seeing God’s holiness allows us to know him, even while his holiness exposes sin. Holiness does not push us away. It draws us into His redeeming presence. Seeing God clearly always reveals both His glory and our need.

Quote of the Day

“God’s holiness is not a cold purity but a blazing, radiant love.” — Thomas Torrance
