Scripture Focus: Hebrews 1:3
“The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being…” (NIV)
Devotional Thought
Think of how a sunrise reveals color and detail that darkness kept hidden. Jesus does that for God — He brings the Father’s character out of the shadows and into full view.
Interpretation
Hebrews portrays Jesus as the radiant shining of God's glory and the exact imprint of the Father's being, meaning he perfectly reveals the Father's heart — his love, mercy, and desire for all people to be drawn into relationship through responsive faith. Radiance is not a soft glow like a hallow, but brilliant brightness. As the divine Son who speaks God's final word to humanity after the prophets, Jesus is that spotlight that illuminates the Father's compassionate character, upholding all creation by his powerful word while providing purification from sins available to everyone who turns to him. This verse emphasizes Jesus not as a distant judge but as the living expression of God's welcoming grace, making the invisible Father's heart visible and accessible in a way that invites free human response rather than overriding it.
Contemporary Relevance
When your world grows dim, Jesus is the light that shows the Father’s heart. His compassion toward sinners, His gentleness with the broken, His righteous anger toward injustice — these are not exceptions; they are the exact imprint of God’s character. As sun breaks the darkness of night, the person of Jesus pushes back the spiritual darkness so we can see the wonder of God’s glory.

“Christ is the light in whose brightness we see the Father.” — Athanasius
