Scripture Focus: Colossians 1:15
“The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.” (NIV)
Devotional Thought
We all look for someone who can show us what God is really like. Paul answers that longing in a single sentence: look at Jesus, and you are looking at God.
Interpretation
Paul calls Jesus the “image of the invisible God,” emphasizing that he perfectly reveals the Father’s heart and character in a way that no one else can. From this perspective, Jesus is the fullest expression of who God is—showing God's love, grace, and truth through his life and actions. The title “firstborn of all creation” highlights Jesus’ supreme status and authority, not implying he is a created being, but that he holds the highest place in God’s purpose and plan over all creation. This verse beautifully shows that through Jesus, believers see and know the invisible God personally and clearly, reflecting a view that honors Jesus as uniquely revealing God’s heart to humanity. The image presented invites believers to look to Jesus as the definitive revelation of God’s nature and saving love.
Contemporary Relevance
In his book from the 1930s, Your God is Too Small, J. B. Phillips responds to a handful of distorted images of God that were present at his time and remain so in our own. Whenever your picture of God becomes distorted — hardened by fear, blurred by suffering, or shaped by culture — Jesus comes to clear the lenses so we may see God clearly once again. Compassion, justice, humility, courage, forgiveness — these are not just His traits; they are God’s traits on display. If you want to see God, you only have to look at the life of Jesus.
Quote of the Day:
“Jesus is God spelling Himself out in language we can understand.” — S. D. Gordon
Reflection Question:
When you wrestle with confusion about God, do you consult your own assumptions, or do you look first to Jesus, the perfect image of God?
Prayer Prompt:
Ask Jesus to reveal the Father’s heart to you clearly this week.
