Scripture Focus: Ephesians 2:8–9
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith…” (NIV)
Devotional Thought
We often talk about “earning” things — our grades, our paycheck, our reputation. We are often taught to stand on our own. Salvation breaks that pattern; it is a gift we could never earn.
Interpretation
Paul emphasizes that salvation is entirely by God's grace, given through faith, and not the result of human effort or good works, so no one can boast about earning it. This passage highlights that Jesus’ saving work is a free gift that we receive by trusting in Him, not by anything we achieve on our own. Grace is the unmerited favor of God that initiates and completes salvation, underscoring that our response — faith — is itself enabled by God's gift. Apparently, some in Ephesus thought that by their righteous deeds they could qualify themselves for salvation. While humans freely respond to God, it is always God who initiates, empowers, and accomplishes the work of salvation through Christ. Therefore, salvation stands fully on Jesus’ grace, ensuring that God receives all the glory for our new life.
Contemporary Relevance
Have you ever wondered if you have done enough to deserve salvation? Grace releases us from the anxiety of that concern. Grace frees us from self-reliance and performance-driven spirituality. You are not loved because you are worthy for we will never be worthy; you are loved because God is gracious. We can never store up enough credits to make things right with God. Salvation is God’s initiative, and faith is the trusting response that welcomes His rescue.
