Scripture Focus: John 1:29

“Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (NIV)

Devotional Thought

Sacrifice feels distant in modern life. Talk of animal sacrifice seems bizarre and inhumane to the 21st century western mind, but in Scripture it is the language of freedom, forgiveness, and covenant love. John points to Jesus and declares: He is the sacrificial Lamb.

Interpretation

John records John the Baptist's proclamation, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" as he identifies Jesus as the ultimate sacrificial offering foreshadowed in Israel's multiple sacrificial lambs, the Passover lambs, the temple sacrifices, and Isaiah's suffering servant, whose innocent blood brings deliverance from sin's bondage for all people. Our reference may particularly be the sacrifice which carried the sins of the people into the wilderness on the Day of Atonement. “All of the above” is the best bet. This title emphasizes Jesus' voluntary, perfect submission as the spotless lamb provided by God himself, fulfilling the temple sacrifices by bearing humanity's sin in a once-for-all act that opens covenant membership and forgiveness to Jew and Gentile alike. Rather than a penal transaction, Jesus' lamb-like sacrifice reveals God's faithful love, inviting free human response through faith to experience cleansing and restoration in his new covenant community.

Contemporary Relevance

What does it mean that Jesus takes away our sin. Jesus does not just forgive sins abstractly; He breaks sin’s power personally. His sacrifice reminds us that grace is costly, not cheap. No matter how Lamb of God is framed, it means Jesus dies as sacrifice for sin. Sacrifice invites us to receive forgiveness deeply and to embrace a life of gratitude and humility.

Quote of the Day

“Jesus, the Lamb of God, carries away our sin—not as a ritual but as a profound act of divine love.” — John Stott
