Scripture Focus:

Colossians 2:6–7

“Continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him…” (NIV)

Devotional Thought

A tree’s survival in a storm depends on its roots. Shallow roots make it vulnerable; deep roots keep it anchored. Your life in Christ depends on what you are rooted in.

Interpretation

Paul chooses to blend two vivid metaphors in his choice of words: a tree sinking its roots deep into soil and a structure rising steadily upward. Both images emphasize ongoing growth — faith that deepens and expands. Of utmost importance is that the rooting is “in him,” that Jesus is our anchor point. Life in Christ is not a single moment but a continual journey of being strengthened, nourished, and shaped. Growth comes through habits that draw you close to Him — Scripture, prayer, community, obedience. Roots

strengthen when they remain in good soil.

Contemporary Relevance

Roots are unlike a foundation. A foundation is poured once, and the structure is built upon it. Roots are not something that are set once and forgotten. Roots continue to grow deeper and wider throughout the life of the tree. Your faith becomes resilient through continual deepening — choosing to stay connected to Christ even in dry seasons, distractions, and storms. When you cultivate rhythms that keep you rooted, you develop a life that can withstand pressure and grow in gratitude.

Quote of the Day

“True spiritual growth comes from being deeply rooted in Christ—a foundation that sustains us no matter what.” — Priscilla Shirer
