Sanctification As Spiritual Struggle

Devotional Thought

Every believer experiences the inner tug-of-war — wanting what is good while feeling pulled toward old patterns. Grace gives us life, but learning to live by it is often a battle. The believer stands in a paradox — declared righteous in Christ, yet daily warring against sin’s lingering power. Sanctification is not an escape from struggle, but the means by which grace proves stronger than sin’s hold.

Interpretation

Paul contrasts Adam’s trespass with Christ’s triumph, unveiling the scope of divine grace that breaks death’s dominion. In Adam, humanity inherited corruption and defeat; in Christ, we receive righteousness and the reign of life. Yet this “reigning” life is not passive — it unfolds as believers, empowered by grace, resist sin’s tyranny and are reshaped into Christ’s likeness. Sanctification, then, is not self-improvement through effort, but grace applied through struggle — where the Holy Spirit progressively subdues the power of sin within. The spiritual struggle of sanctification is the arena where grace proves victorious, not our strength.

Contemporary Relevance

In a world that prizes instant transformation, many Christians grow discouraged by the slowness of holiness. But Romans 5:17 reminds us that reigning in life happens through grace, not apart from struggle. Each temptation resisted and each confession made becomes an act of reigning with Christ. Our failures need not define us — they reveal our need for grace, which alone rules the heart into freedom.
