Scripture Focus: 1 Peter 4:10
“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others…” (NIV)
Devotional Thought
Imagine buying someone a birthday gift. You gave the gift a lot of thought to make sure it was exactly right. However, when you see them weeks after their birthday the gift is will wrapped in its decorative paper. A gift unopened is a gift unused. Peter reminds us that spiritual gifts are meant to be opened, exercised, and shared.
Interpretation
Peter calls every believer to faithfully manage the diverse spiritual gifts God has given through his grace, treating them not as personal possessions but as entrusted resources for serving one another in the community. These "gifts" (charismata) reflect the multifaceted grace of God, freely bestowed to empower mutual ministry simply as opportunities for loving response to God's kindness. As "good stewards," believers act like household managers distributing the Master's bounty, ensuring God's varied grace flows generously to build up the body of Christ in everyday fellowship. This stewardship highlights God's empowering presence active now in his people, fostering unity and service amid present trials.
Contemporary Relevance
Your gifts are divine opportunities to reflect Jesus through service. When you open and use your gift — whether that’s encouragement, leadership, mercy, or hospitality — you participate in God’s renewing work. God has offered for you to be his partner in accomplishing his purpose. Gifts mature through use, not storage. Do not allow your gifts to collect dust, rust, and fade from neglect. The Spirit invites you to practice your gift today.

“The Spirit not only teaches us truth but also transforms our hearts, guiding us to become more like Jesus every day.” — Dallas Willard
