Taking Up Your Cross to Follow Jesus

The cross is not only something Jesus carried — it is something He calls His followers to carry too. And the cross that he calls his followers to carry is something more costly than a piece of jewelry.

Interpretation

Jesus calls all who desire to follow him to a path of self-denial, daily cross-bearing, and obedient discipleship, echoing the Roman execution practice where condemned prisoners carried their cross to death as a symbol of total surrender. "Taking up the cross daily" emphasizes an ongoing, willing embrace of suffering, rejection, and sacrifice that mirrors Jesus' own journey to the cross — not as payment for sin but as faithful response to God's call — inviting believers into union with his obedient life.
