Devotional Thought

We often wonder, “What is God’s will for my life?” Paul gives part of the answer plainly: God wants to make us holy.

Interpretation

1 Thessalonians 4:3 plainly states that God's will for believers is their sanctification, a call to pursue holiness by turning away from sexual immorality and living in purity as part of God's covenant community. In this context, "sanctification" describes the ongoing process of being set apart for God, empowered by the Spirit yet requiring active human response and cooperation with grace, consistent with views that emphasize free choice in responding to divine initiative. Holiness here is not an automatic decree but a relational journey where believers align their lives with God's transformative purposes, reflecting his holy character in everyday conduct. The verse underscores God's desire for wholeness and moral integrity among his people, inviting them into a life that mirrors his purity without implying irresistible force or predetermined outcomes.

Contemporary Relevance

God’s will is less about our future plans and more about our present character. Holiness is the Spirit reshaping our desires, our loves, and our decisions so we reflect Jesus. Sanctification is partnership — God works, and we respond.
