Scripture Focus: Matthew 12:28

“But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.”

Devotional Thought

If a ruler wants people to recognize his reign, he sends a symbol — a seal, a messenger, a sign. Jesus’ sign is not a crown or flag. It is the Holy Spirit Himself.

Interpretation

In Matthew’s parallel to Luke 11:20, Matthew records Jesus' response to accusations that he casts out demons by Satan's power, declaring instead that his exorcisms by the Spirit of God signal the arrival of God's kingdom among them. This act displays Jesus' compassionate kingship, as he actively invades evil's territory to liberate the oppressed, restoring wholeness to suffering lives without demanding merit or sacrifice. The present spiritual reign of Christ is advancing through mercy. Jesus' victory over demons is framed as a foretaste of his cross triumph — conquering sin's dominion through divine love and solidarity, drawing people into restored relationship with the Father. The Holy Spirit was at work in the life of Jesus.

Contemporary Relevance

The Holy Spirit is not merely a comforting force; He is the empowering presence of God’s Kingdom in your life. As the Holy Spirit empowered the ministry of Jesus, his presence in our life offers empowerment for God’s purposes in our own. He convicts, comforts, guides, strengthens, and transforms. The Spirit equips you to participate in Jesus’ mission — bringing healing, hope, and justice wherever you go.

Quote of the Day

“The Spirit’s power through Jesus breaks the chains of darkness and restores the captives.” — John Stott
