The Public Spectacle of Victory

Scripture Focus: Colossians 2:15
"And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross." (NIV)
Devotional Thought
Envisage watching a championship boxing match where the underdog seems defeated in the final round, battered and bloodied — only for the bell to ring and the underdog raise his hand in total victory. The cross looked like the ultimate victory for the powers of darkness—a moment of absolute defeat for the Son of God. Yet, in the upside-down logic of the Kingdom, the instrument of death became the weapon of triumph. Heaven calls it a victory parade.
Interpretation
Paul uses the imagery of a Roman "Triumph," where a conquering general would parade his defeated enemies through the streets to show they were disarmed and powerless. On the cross, Jesus did not just pay a debt; He engaged in spiritual warfare, stripping the "powers and authorities" of their only weapon: the power of accusation and the fear of death. This triumph reveals the cross not as passive suffering but as God's bold initiative to liberate believers from oppressive spiritual bondage, inviting all who respond in faith to share in Christ's freedom without coercion. By rising from the grave, Jesus inaugurated the "New Creation," proving that the reign of sin is a terminal one. This victory is "already" won, meaning believers can live with authority now, but it is "not yet" fully consummated until the final renewal of all things. We live in the overlap of the ages, where the defeated enemy still rages, but his doom is sure because the Lamb has conquered.
Contemporary Relevance
Because Jesus is victorious, you do not have to live in fear of the "powers" or the finality of the grave. You are part of a kingdom that is currently breaking into the world, bringing life where there was only death.
Quote of the Day
“The cross is the moment evil thought it won—and discovered it was disarmed.” — John Stott
