Scripture Focus: John 14:26
“…the Holy Spirit… will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” (NIV)
Devotional Thought
Ever had a Scripture or a word from Jesus come to mind at exactly the right moment? That is not random — that is the Spirit at work.
Interpretation
John 14:26 records Jesus' promise that the Father will send the Holy Spirit in his name as the Advocate who actively teaches believers all necessary truths and brings Jesus' own words to their remembrance. The recollection that the Holy Spirit brings will result in the composition of the gospel after Jesus has departed to heaven. This passage speaks to us today of the Spirit's ongoing role as a personal instructor within the community of faith, illuminating the gospel message of God's covenant faithfulness and enabling free response to Christ's invitation. In context, the Spirit works through Jesus' teachings to guide disciples into fuller understanding, reflecting God's relational initiative in drawing people through truth. The verse portrays the Spirit not as imposing new revelations but as faithfully recalling and applying Christ's words.
Contemporary Relevance
The Spirit engages us in living relationship with Christ by calling Jesus’ words to mind when we need them most — during temptation, conflict, grief, or decision-making. This is part of how God guides His people in the present: by faithfully teaching and reminding. However, we can aid the Holy Spirit in this task by memorizing Scripture. As we memorize Scripture, the Holy Spirit has a larger bank to draw from. Stay open. Ask for His help. Expect Him to speak.
Quote of the Day
“The Spirit teaches and reminds us, making Jesus’ words alive and active in our hearts.” — Dallas Willard
