To Depart and Be With Christ

Devotional Thought

Think of the one person you long to see most. Paul says the joy of being with Christ surpasses everything else.

Interpretation

Paul reveals his deep inner tension as he faces death, expressing an ardent desire "to depart and be with Christ, which is far better," portraying immediate conscious fellowship with Jesus upon leaving this life. The word "depart" pictures leaving this earthly life like a ship sailing away or a tent being folded up, signaling the end of mortal struggles and the immediate transition to Christ's presence. This phrasing underscores that for believers, death is not annihilation or purgatory but instant fellowship with Jesus himself — intimate, conscious communion without the hindrance of sin or suffering. Paul's preference for this "far better" state highlights the surpassing joy of being fully with Christ compared to continued earthly ministry. Contemporary Relevance
