Scripture Focus: Colossians 3:17

“…whatever you do… do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus…” (NIV)

Devotional Thought

We try to separate “spiritual life” from everyday life. Paul erases that line: everything becomes sacred when done for Jesus.

Interpretation

Paul writes to believers learning how to live as new creation people in ordinary settings — that every word spoken and every action taken is to be done “in the name of the Lord Jesus,” meaning in conscious connection with his person, lordship, and saving work. There is nothing outside of Jesus purview. The verse assumes believers have been united with Christ by grace through faith and now live within his reconciling, new-creation reality, so that ordinary life becomes an arena where his character and reign are expressed. This comprehensive “whatever you do” flows from Christ’s once-for-all cross and resurrection — which liberate from sin’s guilt and powers — and anticipates the final, renewed creation where his name is perfectly honored. Thus, the verse presents daily speech and conduct as visible signs that point beyond the believer to Jesus himself.

Contemporary Relevance

We can take a verse like this and confine good works to church-related ministry. However, your good works are not limited to church ministry. They happen in how you speak to your spouse, how you do your job, how you refuse bitterness, how you manage power, how you relate to co-workers, how you honor the poor and the stranger. God is not only saving souls; He is restoring humans to holy, everyday goodness.
