Scripture Focus: Exodus 15:11

“Who among the gods is like you, LORD? Who is like you—majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders?” (NIV)

Devotional Thought

When is a time that you were overcome with such a sense of wonder that it took your breath away. Moments of breathtaking beauty — a sunrise, a symphony, a newborn’s cry — can silence us with awe. After the Red Sea crossing, Israel responded to God with that same kind of wonder.

Interpretation

This verse bursts from Moses' victory song after God's triumphant deliverance of Israel through the Red Sea, posing a rhetorical question that celebrates Yahweh's incomparable uniqueness among the powerless "gods" of Egypt and other nations. The verse highlights God's majestic holiness — a radiant purity that sets him gloriously apart — as well as his awe-inspiring works that evoke reverent praise and display miraculous wonders like drowning Pharaoh's army while saving his people. In context, this praise underscores God's faithful covenant love, actively rescuing the oppressed through gracious acts that reveal his supreme character, inviting awe at the One who alone wields such redemptive power.

Contemporary Relevance

Is it possible to become so familiar with God that you lose a sense of divine wonder and awe? True worship begins with awe. When you see God clearly — His power, mercy, justice, and beauty — your heart naturally responds with devotion. God’s holiness does not push you away; it invites transformation. The more you grasp His uniqueness, the more your life reflects His character through love, humility, justice, and compassion. When we see God act it leaves us breathless.

Quote of the Day

“Worship begins in awe, for only awe can reorient us to the God who is wholly other yet wholly near.” — Marva Dawn

Reflection Question

When did a truth about God last fill you with awe, and how did that moment reshape your perspective?

Prayer Prompt

Praise God for His holiness and saving power; ask Him to renew your awe.
