Scripture Focus: John 6:68

“Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” (NIV)

Devotional Thought

Have you ever been in a puzzling place where every option makes quitting look preferable? When life feels uncertain and every option seems unclear, Peter’s confession reminds us where true life is found: in the voice of Jesus.

Interpretation

Simon Peter’s bold confession to Jesus amid many disciples abandoning him, declaring, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life.” In this moment, after Jesus’ challenging bread-of-life discourse, Peter recognizes Jesus’ teachings as the sole source of true, everlasting life, distinct from fleeting physical sustenance or human wisdom. The “words” here refer to Jesus’ authoritative revelation from the Father—life-giving truths that awaken faith, sustain the spirit, and point to resurrection hope, setting them apart as uniquely divine. This verse underscores Jesus as the exclusive bearer of eternal life’s message, where his spoken word echoes God’s creative and saving power, drawing the faithful to cling to him alone.

Contemporary Relevance

We often reach moments when Jesus’ teaching challenges our desires or disrupts our expectations. Yet life is found not in avoiding the difficult teachings but in trusting the One who speaks them. His words guide us through uncertainty, offer hope beyond our understanding, and anchor us in God’s restoring work. It is only in the teachings of Scripture that we will find the sustenance that will offer us life.

Quote of the Day

“The words of Jesus are not escape routes from reality but invitations into God’s restoring mission.” — Ruth Padilla DeBorst
