Scripture Focus: Psalm 86:10

“For you are great and do marvelous deeds; you alone are God.” (NIV)

Devotional Thought

We admire human accomplishments — works of art, innovation, and leadership. Awards ceremonies and shrines are still built today to honor these accomplishments. Yet even the greatest achievements fade compared to God’s works.

Interpretation

David prays the profound truth that the Lord is uniquely great and performs wondrous acts that no other can, affirming His exclusive divine power and sovereignty. This verse highlights God as the one true God, whose mighty deeds prove His incomparable nature, inviting all nations to recognize and worship Him alone. This acknowledges God's active and gracious involvement in the world — both in creation and salvation — that calls for human response and covenant faithfulness. The psalmist’s awe at God’s greatness underscores the relational aspect of faith, where God’s wondrous works draw people into a living relationship with Him. Thus, Psalm 86:10 affirms God’s singular glory and mighty works that sustain and redeem, encouraging heartfelt trust in the God who alone reigns supreme. No one can compare to Yahweh.

Contemporary Relevance

God’s great acts are not remote events of the ancient past. God continues to perform mighty deeds in the lives of the faithful (whether or not we notice them). When you feel overwhelmed, remembering who God is reorients your heart. The God who formed creation, liberated Israel, and raised Jesus continues to work in your life today. He is not passive — He listens, guides, responds, and acts with purpose. Take a good look at how God has acted in your life in even small ways. Trust grows when you remember His deeds.

“God’s sovereignty is not domination but faithful rule for the good of His creation.” — N. T. Wright
