Scripture Focus: Ephesians 2:18
“For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.” (NIV)
Devotional Thought
Access changes everything. An invitation into a place you could not enter on your own, like a backstage pass, makes you feel both humbled and welcomed. Paul says believers have that kind of access to God Himself.
Interpretation
Writing to a divided church, Paul reveals the beautiful teamwork of the Trinity in opening the way for both Jews and Gentiles to approach God as Father, with Jesus as the bridge who tears down dividing walls through his life, death, and resurrection that invites all to respond in faith. The Son provides the access by reconciling divided humanity into one new people, while the one Spirit empowers believers from every background to draw near with confidence, reflecting God's inclusive desire for relationship over ethnic or works-based barriers. This verse highlights not a coercive decree but a gracious partnership where the Father's welcoming heart, the Son's peacemaking work, and the Spirit's enabling presence cooperate to make communion with God available to whoever turns to him.
Contemporary Relevance
Prayer and worship are shaped by this truth. Unlike the uncertainty of Esther entering the kings throne room, we do not approach God as outsiders hoping for a hearing, but as beloved children welcomed home. This access is personal and dynamic — God invites conversation, trust, and partnership. The writer of Hebrews paints a picture of us bursting into God’s presence without apology because Jesus opened the door for us. You can draw near without fear because God Himself has made the way.
Quote of the Day
“The triune God is a community of life, calling us into community with one another.” — John Mbiti
