Scripture Focus: 1 Corinthians 10:31
“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” (NIV)
Devotional Thought
What are the most ordinary parts of your day — your commute, your conversations, your meals? Suppose that activity could become worship.
Interpretation
Paul addresses debates about food offered to idols. His response reframes the entire Christian life: everything belongs to God and everything can glorify God. 1 Corinthians 10:31 calls believers to pursue God's glory in the most ordinary activities — eating, drinking, or whatever daily tasks fill life —transforming mundane routines into acts of worship within a diverse community of Jews, Gentiles, and the church. In its context of navigating Christian freedom amid cultural pressures like idol-offered food, Paul urges selfless choices that build up neighbors rather than assert personal rights, reflecting Christ's example of pleasing others for their salvation. This everyday worship glorifies God not through ritual but through loving actions that draw people toward faith in Jesus, embodying the emphasis on covenant inclusion and faithful response available to all who choose obedience.
Contemporary Relevance
Your life does not have “sacred” and “secular” boxes. Sacred and secular are uninvited hold outs from Platonic philosophy with saw everything in dualistic terms. God is Lord of every moment of your life, and calls us to utilize the most mundane moments as opportunities to shine a light on him. God is present in your commute, chores, emails, patience with coworkers, and how you treat family. You glorify God not only in what you do but how you do it — with integrity, purpose, and love.
Quote of the Day
“Every action, no matter how small, can glorify God when done with a heart fully devoted to Him.” — A. W. Tozer
