Scripture Focus: Micah 6:8

“…what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” (NIV)

Devotional Thought

In a complicated world, we often ask, “God, what do You want from me?” Micah answers with simple, covenant clarity.

Interpretation

Micah stands at the climax of a courtroom scene where God, having reminded Israel of His saving acts, answers their question about what He truly requires — not extravagant sacrifices, but a life shaped by covenant faithfulness. The verse gathers the law and the prophets into three relational commands: “to do justice,” meaning to actively align personal and communal life with God’s righteous standards, especially in how the vulnerable are treated; “to love mercy” (steadfast love), delighting in loyal kindness that mirrors God’s own gracious character; and “to walk humbly with your God,” a continuing, dependent journey under God’s reign rather than self-reliance or mere ritual. This summons assumes God’s prior gracious initiative in covenant, yet genuinely calls God’s people to responsive, Spirit-enabled obedience as the fruit of that grace, not its cause. This is not vague spirituality. It is God’s character expressed in community life.

Contemporary Relevance

Good works include public righteousness and private compassion. They include truth-telling, peacemaking, generosity, advocacy, and humility. This is not political fashion — it is the ancient way of God’s people. As you walk with God, your life becomes a steady protest against evil and a living sign of the Kingdom.

Quote of the Day

“To act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly is the path God requires from His people.” — Walter Brueggemann
