Breaking Bad

1/8/25 Mark 1:21-34

Mark shows Jesus with the power to heal an assortment of diseases. However, the first demonstration of power He shows is the power to cast out evil spirits.

When Jesus comes across a man with an evil spirit, what the evil spirit says is telling. First, the spirit recognizes Jesus as the Holy One of God, a title starkly like the Holy One of Israel (Isa 47:4). It again declares the divinity of Jesus.

But the question the demon asks is equally important. “Have you come to destroy us?” The evil spirit isn’t speaking for himself. He is speaking for all demonic spirits. Is Jesus going to destroy them all?

Mark wants us to see in Jesus the authority to break the power of darkness, to subjugate evil so that the kingdom of God can be established as promised, and that Eden could be restored.

Q: How does Jesus breaking the power of evil prove He is the Messiah, and initiate God's redemption?
