1/16/25 Mark 2: 18-22

As Jesus is confronted on the question of fasting, He uses the occasion to reveal more about Himself and His mission. John's disciples fasted, demonstrating lament for the brokenness of sin. However, Jesus says His disciples aren't fasting because you don't fast during a wedding.

Jesus is again borrowing from the imagery of Isaiah to define who He is. In Isaiah (61:10, 62:5) God’s relationship is described in terms of a groom coming for His bride.

It is, also, a picture of God’s redemptive work. In Isaiah, and here in the words of Jesus, God is engaging His people in a new relationship. It is a picture of intimate, covenant love.

In this new found relationship, rules change. New dynamics take place. Jesus cannot be contained in the old way of religious formality.
